My 3 brothers and I had not been in the same place at the same time together in nearly 10 years. I am the youngest …

My 3 brothers and I had not been in the same place at the same time together in nearly 10 years. I am the youngest of the 4 of us by 8 years and we really did not have much in common beyond family relationships until I was in my 20′s. I was still young when they moved out of our parent’s home and I moved out west from New Jersey when I was only 24 so we really never spent much quality time together as a group. One thing that we have in common is a love of golf. Our Dad was a big golfer and introduced us to the game directly and indirectly as it was part of his lifestyle while we were growing up and we were always around the game.

I have been out west now for nearly 20 years and had not gone back home since Christmas of 2001. Although I enjoyed 1 or 2 individual visits from my brothers out here over the past 10 years I had always dreamed of just the 4 of us spending a golf vacation together here in Tahoe to reconnect and get to know each other again. I always thought that Old Greenwood would be the perfect venue for our reunion long before the notion of my working for Tahoe Mountain Club ever entered my mind. I even clipped a picture of one of the Cabins at Old Greenwood and posted it on my vision board among the other things that I want to bring into my reality. I do not know what was different about this year. Maybe it was my persistence in asking them to come, my doing the legwork researching flights into Reno from Newark and Philadelphia, or the daily photos of Old Greenwood and Gray’s Crossing golf courses I emailed to them from my smart-phone to get them excited. In the end, I think it was just the fact that I decided that it was going to happen, set my intention to make it happen and then helped them realize that all it took was a decision on their part to do the same. Brother Chris was the first to exclaim “I’m in” followed shortly by brother Tim. A mentor of mine always said, ”when the intention is clear, the mechanism will appear”. This was proven by my brother Fred who was the last to commit to the trip when he said, ”I don’t know how I’m going to swing it but I’m in…..I haven’t spent time with my 3 brothers together for 10 years and I’m in.” He swung it.

They arrived on a Saturday afternoon. I picked them up at the airport and after hugs and hellos we made our way to a brew pub in Reno where we picked up where we had left off so long ago over beers and appetizers, barely noticing the playoff baseball game that Tim and Fred were so anxious to see. After a long awaited visit with their sister-in-law and nephews, we made our way up to Old Greenwood. I was hoping to get there during daylight hours but could not tear my kids away from their uncles some of whom had never met. We checked into the Cabin and to say the least, it far exceeded their expectations. I’m sure that they were expecting a “cabin” in the traditional sense, small and rustic with a iron pot hanging over anopen fire. So when we entered the 3,000′ 4 bedroom 3bath home with vaulted ceilings, gourmet kitchen, pool table, flat screen TVs and a spa on the deck the knew they were in for a comfortable stay.

We spent 4 nights and 3 days sharing meals together, playing golf and and getting to know each other again over beers and late night talks in the spa. We had a pool table in our parent’s home when I was a kid so having the pool table at the Cabin provided great entertainment and reminded them of when I used to carry a foot stool around the table in our parent’s basement so I could play when I was a little kid.

The kitchen in the Cabin was well equipped with high end appliances, all the necessary accessories and a nice gas grill on the deck. I enjoy cooking so I took it upon myself to prepare most of the meals in house. We did eat out on Sunday enjoying appetizers and draft beers after golf at PJ’s at Gray’s Crossing. The view over the 18th hole to the Mt. Rose combined with great food and quality beer makes for one of the best post round experiences available anywhere. We did not fill up too much as we would make our way over to Lake Tahoe for dinner at Wild Goose. I wanted them to get in a little Lake time and also show off all the great amenities of the Club. We enjoyed Chef’s choice appetizers of mussels with jalapenos and beef carpaccio both of which were excellent. Chris and Fred both chose the seafood pasta, Tim, the bacon wrapped turkey meatloaf and for me, the Sezchuan peppercorn scallops. I asked Pat the wine guy to suggest a glass of wine to accompany my meal and encouraged my brothers to put their trust in him as well. A good choice as all the pairings were just right!

Brother Tim is a huge Frank Sinatra fan and asked if we could go check out the nearby Cal-Neva casino once owned by the legendary crooner.

Tim in front of Cal-Neva

I called my friend Hans who set up up with a VIP tour of the place including backstage, underground tunnels, showrooms and Marilyn’s cabin. Tim was amazed at the history and how nearly everything was just like it was back in the day. We did not see any ghosts that night and Hans swears that they are present telling us several stories about sightings and strange occurrences.

Earlier that day we played our first round of golf at The Golf Cub at Gray’s Crossing. The weather was a bit chilly and windy and nobody cared. The sun came out just often enough to take the edge off the cool temps and provided for an overall pleasant day. The golf course was in fantastic shape and my brothers were very impressed with the whole experience there. After our post round refreshments we even chose to go back out for an “Emergency 9″ as termed by the outside services staff member who kept our bags on the cars in anticipation of our wanting more! Monday we played Old Greenwood which is a different and equally awesome course with beautiful views of Northstar mountain, Mt Rose and the Sierra Crest. We enjoyed the post round refreshments including tasty appetizers and draft beer during happy hour at the Bearfoot Bar and grill in the Pavilion at Old Greenwood. We returned to OG for golf on Tuesday though I had to bail after 9 holes to attend a meeting. The timing was perfect because I was feeling rain drops as I walked off the 9th green. The three of them finished without a significant rain event enjoying the course even more the second time around.

My family came up and joined us for our last night. The boys and their uncles were anxious to spend more time together not knowing when they would have another opportunity to do so. We feasted on a wonderful steak dinner with all 8 of us comfortably seated around the large dining room table. We played pool, soaked in the spa and enjoyed each other’s company late into the evening until my young boys eventually crashed for the night. In the morning everyone said their goodbye’s and I got the brothers to the airport just in time to check their bags. Our long awaited reunion felt abbreviated after only four days. We had a great time catching up, re-discovering and sharing our passion for golf. Old Greenwood was indeed the perfect venue and when I suggested that when we do it again we could choose a location closer to their homes on the east coast they all enthusiastically agreed that there was no reason to do so.

Every Wednesday at 4:00 Tahoe Mountain Club offers a FREE guided mountain bike ride for Members. I had wanted to participate for weeks and even brought my bike to Old Greenwood and back home a few Wednesdays in a row before making it happen. When I was finally in my cycling shorts, I was excited for the opportunity. I met Julie in the Pavilion 10 minutes before the scheduled departure. She offers to check out your bike for proper fit if you arrive early. A properly fit bike makes such a difference in how efficiently you ride and how much control you have over the bike on varied terrain. There was only one other Member, Bob, in for the ride that day and after looking us over and sizing us up Julie led us out toward the trail. The rides are open to everyone 6 and older and Julie, the guide, will determine the route and duration of the ride based on the experience level of the group. She must have thought that Bob and I were in pretty good shape as we went on a 2 hour ride from Old Greenwood around Prosser reservoir, through Gray’s Crossing and back to Old Greenwood. She said that if it was a family with kids, the ride would have been much different.

I have lived in the Tahoe Truckee area for nearly 20 years and rode mountain bikes regularly for the first 10 years or so but had not been on a ride of any significance in a long time. We started out on pavement until we got to the end of Prosser Dam road where it turns to dirt. The warm up on pavement was perfect and as the rubber left the road onto the dirt, I really started getting excited for what lied ahead. We picked up a fun and slightly technical single track that took us through a meadow of beautiful wildflowers to the Prosser dam. The views of Mt. Rose were awesome and the reservoir lay still on the other side of the trail. We linked up to a dirt road and cruised fairly easily to the junction of the Emigrant trail. I had been on this single track many times in the past and immediately remembered how fun this section is. It was mostly downhill and smooth with gentle meandering turns requiring not much more that a look and lean to negotiate at moderate speed. Throughout the ride, Julie did a great job of setting our expectations and letting us take turns in the lead position and somehow knew that I was faster downhill while Bob was a better climber and we always seem to be in the right place at the right time keeping it fun for us all.

It was a beautiful and fun ride and when I was done I felt that I got a good workout without being totally worked over. I was able to enjoy the scenery of the mountains, wildflowers and the lake while keeping a comfortable pace. We stopped as needed for a breather and water while we enjoyed the views and conversation. It was great having a guide and although I was familiar with some of the trails we rode, I was experiencing much of it for the first time and I look forward to going back and riding it again.

The family and I decided to spend the day at the Pavilion at Old Greenwood for the first time on Father’s Day. We were greeted …

The family and I decided to spend the day at the Pavilion at Old Greenwood for the first time on Father’s Day. We were greeted by the Member services staff who quickly and enthusiastically took care of getting our pictures taken for our Member ID cards. This is no small feat when dealing with three boys aged 10, 8 and 5 who are really excited to get to the pools!

We walked out into the sunshine and the kids thought they were in heaven. Pools, play structures, a waterslide and family spa laid out for their enjoyment. I had my eye on the “Oasis”, a separate area reserved for adults only with a lap pool, spa and plenty of lounge chairs for quiet relaxation. But this was Father’s Day and it’s about family, so we headed toward the kids’ splash pool. My five-year-old jumped right in and started enjoying the splash pool complete with fountains, faucets, a dump bucket, cargo net and waterslide. As much as I was enjoying relaxing with my wife on the lounge chairs, I had to join in the fun. The only thing better than watching your child playing, laughing and having the time of his life is to join in and be a participant rather than just a spectator.

The older boys went to the family pool and the waterslide. They quickly made friends with the other kids, and enjoyed playing on the slide with their new friends. They finally needed a short rest, so we reconvened in the family spa for some relaxing family time together.

We were getting hungry so we placed an order at Bearfoot Bar & Grill. They have an outdoor walk-up station for easy ordering. We were given a beeper to alert us when the food was ready for pick up. While we waited, we tossed the football around on the new grassy lawn and even got Mom in on the fun. A few minutes later our food was ready, and we shared a spread of chicken strips, sweet potato fries and homemade hummus with pita wedges and fresh veggies. To top it off, the kids got to make their own ice cream sundaes at the Club’s free “Sunday Sundaes” event (held weekly on Sunday), where kids can build their own creations with the dozen or so toppings available. I’m not sure if gummy worms, rainbow sprinkles, and chocolate sauce is to my taste, but my 5 year old sure had a great time creating it and he ate every bite.

The boys saw a group of kids and Club staff playing together, and asked if they could join in. It turns out it was “Camp Night” at Kids’ Club, which includes playtime, dinner and a movie. The staff members welcomed my boys enthusiastically, but it was time for us to head home. So, I told the boys we’d take a rain check on Camp Night for now. We’re all looking forward to it already… maybe my wife and I will get some quality time at the Oasis next time!
